COMMUNION

Communion Preparation for September 10

Jesus and his disciples had gathered for a Passover meal – a special feast in remembrance of
how God brought the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery. Jesus rose from the table and began to
wash his disciples’ feet – a task usually left to a servant. Through this selfless act, Jesus was
giving his followers an example of how they were to show humility in their treatment of others,
taking the role of a servant in their world.

Jesus then took bread, broke it, and shared it with his disciples as a symbol of how his body
would be broken for them. Afterward, he took the “fruit of the vine” and shared the cup,
symbolizing the blood that he would shed in offering a new covenant of grace.

The Christian church has continued to honor the tradition of Communion as an opportunity to
remember the sacrifice God made in the body and blood of Jesus that was broken and poured
out at the cross to establish a new covenant of grace with humanity.

In preparation to celebrate Communion on September 10
We will consume together the elements of bread and cup during the service. If you want to join in Communion, please have items symbolizing these elements with you.

Try something new! If you have time this week and want to try something new, below is a recipe for homemade unleavened crackers similar to what many churches use for Communion.
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup water

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
2. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
3. With your hands, mix flour, vegetable oil, salt, and water until it forms a ball.
4. With a rolling pin, roll the ball into a thin square. Take a pizza cutter or knife and cut it into small squares.
5. Put the squares of dough onto the parchment paper, and bake in preheated oven for 8-10 minutes. (Watch carefully.)
6. Remove from oven, and allow to cool before eating.
